Chapter 92
With Him who can be known through signs; He who rules the entire universe; He who provides during times of need, and He who continuously sustains all things.
92:1
Traditional (S. I.): By the night when it covers
My translation: Witness is the night when it envelops in darkness.
Root: L-Y-L: night, darkness.
Root: GH-Sh-W: cover something completely, overwhelm, unconscious person.
92:2
Traditional: And [by] the day when it appears
My translation: So too is the daylight when it pierces (through the darkness).
Root: N-He-R: Something to open up, vastness, day/light, water.
Root: J-L-W: disperse, separate, exile, evident, clear, open up.
92:3
Traditional: And [by] He who created the male and female
My translation: Witness is the creation of the male and the female.
Root: Kh-L-Q: estimate, proportionate, balanced, model after something.
Root: Dh-K-R: male, make something safe, recall, remind.
Root: A-N-Tha: female, soft earth.
92:4
Traditional: Indeed, your efforts are diverse.
My translation: You strive for different goals in life;
Root: S-Ain-Y: intend, strive, struggle.
Root: Sh-Tha-Tha: differentiate, different, individualised.
92:5
Traditional: As for he who gives and fears Allah
My translation: He who strives to help others and supervises himself toward righteousness;
Root: Ain-Te-W: receive, deer that must lift its head to eat from trees, give.
Root: W-Q-Y: protect, supervise, careful, oversee.
92:6
Traditional: And believes in the best [reward]
My translation: And dedicates himself, both in thought and action, toward goodness;
Root: Sd-D-Q: To tell the truth, power/strength (since truth contains power), anything that is given in the name of God.
Root: H-S-N: beauty, proportionate/balanced/symmetry.
92:7
Traditional: We will ease him toward ease.
My translation: We will direct his journey toward abundant growth (of his personality).
Root: Y-S-R: softness, ease, abundance, strength.
92:8
Traditional: But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
My translation: As for him who holds back and thinks he is self-sufficient;
Root: B-Kh-L: stop spending what you have, miserliness.
Root: Gh-N-Y: free of need, strong, independent, have enough.
92:9
Traditional: And denies the best [reward]
My translation: Denying his true human potential;
Comment: True human potential = to create harmony and balance within oneself = to develop human personality. Also see Aristotle's writings on the soul, and article on happiness.
Root: K-Z-B: give wrong news on purpose, pretend to sleep, liar, deny.
Root: H-S-N: beauty, proportionate/balanced/symmetry.
92:10
Traditional: We will ease him toward difficulty.
My translation: We will direct his journey toward stagnation (of his personality).
Root: Y-S-R: softness, ease, abundance, strength.
Root: Ain-S-R: hardship, discomfort, difficult condition.
92:11
Traditional: And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?
My translation: His wealth is of no use when his own personality is headed toward destruction.
Root: Gh-N-Y: free of need, strong, independent, have enough.
Root: M-W-L: wealth, rich, wealth that does not stay permanently.
Root: R-D-Y: fall, destruction, annihilation.
92:12
Traditional: Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.
My translation: It is for Us to lead you.
Root: H-D-Y: prominent and light up, lead others, go ahead to show the way, to guide.
92:13
Traditional: And indeed, to us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
My translation: To Us is the Final Destination, and the Beginning.
Root: A-Kh-R: future, last, last segment of a sequence, evolution, revolution.
Root: A-W-L: first, beginning and end, last result.
92:14
Traditional: So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.
My translation: Thus, I warn you of the raging Fire that is smokeless.
Comment: Smokeless fire = a metaphor for mental states - see chapter 104.
Root: N-Dh-R: promise, make aware, warning, someone who warns against destruction.
Root: N-W-R: light, moonlight, flame, fire.
Root: L-Ze-Y: fire without smoke; pure flame.
92:15
Traditional: None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.
My translation: Only those rebellious against God’s laws will feel it;
Root: Sd-L-Y: burn, warm, light a fire.
Root: Sh-Q-W: deprivation, to be ill fated, hard work, mountain that is difficult to climb.
92:16
Traditional: Who had denied and turned away.
My translation: He who ignored and chose another path.
Root: K-Z-B: give wrong news on purpose, pretend to sleep, liar, deny.
Root: W-L-Y: choose another path, get closer to someone, ruler, near, overpower.
92:17
Traditional: But the righteous one will avoid it.
My translation: He who protects himself by following God’s laws will not come near it.
Root: J-N-B: avoid, distance, stranger.
Root: W-Q-Y: protect, supervise, careful, oversee.
92:18
Traditional: [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself.
My translation: He who gives away from his wealth in order to develop his personality, character and soul.
Root: Ain-Te-W: receive, deer that must lift its head to eat from trees, give.
Root: M-W-L: wealth, rich, wealth that does not stay permanently.
Root: Z-K-W: crops or animals to grow, develop, increase, prosper, blossom.
92:19
Traditional: And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded.
My translation: When helping someone, such a person does not seek anything in return.
Root: A-H-D: one, first number, individual.
Root: N-Ain-M: comforting for the heart, fresh leaves, refreshing wind.
Root: J-Z-Y: compensation, return.
92:20
Traditional: But only seeking the face [i.e., acceptance] of his Lord, Most High.
My translation: He only struggles for the approval of his Evolver - God, The Most High.
Root: B-Gh-Y: to struggle in pursuit of something, excessiveness, too much rain.
Root: W-J-He: something to appear, anything that is seen first.
Root: R-B-B: Nurture, develop, look after something beginning to end.
Root: Ain-L-W: highest part of anything, high rank, very lofty.
92:21
Traditional: And he is going to be satisfied.
My translation: Certainly, he will be fulfilled as a human being.
Root: R-D-W/Y: mutual agreement, pleasing, approve.
